Book storage boxes – Whether you’re saving books for a move or storing them for the long term, preparing and packing your collection correctly is important to keep the life of your books. Insects, moisture and mold can damage books that are stored under adverse conditions. Taking the necessary precautions will minimize potential damage and keep your books preserved during storage. Preparation: Select small or medium boxes. To keep insects away, boxes should be closed securely and be free of grease or food particles. File boxes with handles or containers with handles are easier to load.

Examine the books for signs of insects. Small black eggs are often found in the crevices between the pages. Carefully remove any dirt with a soft brush. It wraps the bound volumes with leather or very old books in acid free paper that diminishes the decay and yellowing of the pages. The paper prevents the transfer of stains and oils to other books. Place objects with fragile pages in file boxes to keep the pieces together. Prepare a storage area that is clean, dry, dark and unlikely to be affected by temperature and humidity fluctuations. A well-ventilated room towards the center of the building is ideal. Packaging and storage: Fill book storage boxes with books of various sizes.

Large, heavy books should be flat on the bottom and lighter on top. Alternate ridges and edges to prevent deformation.  Pack books of the same size upright. Do not pack too tight as the covers. Leave a little space around the books to allow air circulation. Fill empty spaces with plastic peanuts or bubble pack. This prevents the books from moving and being damaged when moved. Close and secure the book storage boxes. Stack the boxes on pallets or another elevated platform in the storage area to protect them against flooding. Do not stack containers too high. If there are pipes up, cover the boxes loosely with a sheet of plastic, but allows air circulation.
